Athena's Voice of the Acre® technology transforms best-in-class data into actional intelligence in the form of Geo-Intelligent Profiles.  Below are just a few examples of how communities, utilities and insurance/financial service organizations have utilized Athena's profiles to reduce their wildfire risk exposure and improve their financial performance.

Southwest Utility: Risk_Spend Optimization

Geo-Intelligent Profiles Utilized

A Southwest investor-owned utility (IOU) used asset investment planning software for its multi-year financial and operational plans. Because wildfire risk threatened financial stability, they needed more detailed metrics than standard risk maps could provide.

Athena created an automated process that let the utility upload its transmission and distribution assets and analyze:
1) Which profiles were likely to ignite and spread fire, and
2) Which profiles would burn if adjacent ones burned.

Overall, Athena identified approximately $2.8 billion in potential impact cost across the utility’s service area. Through advanced analytics, Athena pinpointed the optimal locations where the smallest investment could achieve the greatest reduction in potential impact risk. As a result, the utility is now mitigating more risk per dollar spent than would have been possible otherwise.

Texas Utility: Wildfire Risk Mitigation Planning

Geo-Intelligent Profiles Utilized

A Texas IOU had spent several weeks over a couple of months putting together wildfire risk maps to build their mitigation plans from. However, they wanted to make sure the plans they were building were informed with the best available information and analysis. They subscribed to Athena's Landscape Wildfire Risk profile map and were delighted in what they received.

The value was realized immediately because they received the mapping and analysis the next day as opposed to the time and costs related to meetings and the creation of their own risk maps. The accuracy and granularity of Athena's profiling was obvious and validated by individuals with decades of local experience of the landscape and wildfire behavior. For a fraction of the time and costs associated with their own efforts, they received the required information that allowed them to do the real work of building mitigation plans, and do so in confidence that their decisions were supported by the best available information and analysis.

Southwest Utility: Utility Pole Protection

Geo-Intelligent Profiles Utilized

Another Southwest investor-owned utility (IOU) built its Wildfire Mitigation Plan (WMP) using Athena’s wildfire risk profiles and wanted to wrap selected power poles to protect them from wildfire flames. Using conditional flame length metrics from its risk profiles, the utility could see how flame intensity and length varied around each pole.

Athena analyzed this data and provided spatial recommendations on which poles to wrap and at what height, ensuring the most effective protection within a realistic budget. By relying on Athena, the utility made decisions more quickly and at a fraction of the cost of in-house analysis. In addition, Athena’s optimization allowed the utility to protect more poles by grouping them strategically and varying wrap heights, rather than applying a single uniform height to all poles.
